BRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao on Tuesday suspended his daughter and party MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha from the party with immediate effect, following her accusations that her cousins, T Harish Rao and J Santosh Kumar, had blinded him and indulged in corruption and were now framing him in the Kaleshwaram issue.
The BRS stated that Kavitha’s anti-party activities were damaging the party. Although Kavitha had been taking potshots at her brother and the BRS working president KT Rama Rao for the past few months, this time her allegations, particularly aimed at Harish Rao, prompted party supremo KCR to act against her. The BRS party leaders blamed the Congress for igniting discord within the Kalvakuntla family.
Within 24 hours of her accusations against T Harish Rao and J Santosh Kumar, Kalvakuntla Kavitha was suspended by the BRS for indulging in anti-party activities.
The BRS stated that “The party leadership took the matter seriously as the recent behaviour and ongoing anti-party activities of party MLC Smt K Kavitha were damaging the BRS party. Party president Sri K Chandrasekhar Rao has taken the decision to suspend Smt. K Kavitha from the party with immediate effect.”
Alleging that Kavitha fell into the trap set by Congress, BRS MLA Palle Rajeshwar Reddy, a close confidante of KCR, said that the concerns of the party’s rank and file led to her suspension. “The Congress has sown the discord within the Kalvakuntla family,” he said.

Kavitha felt sidelined ever since she had been released from jail on bail following the Delhi Excise case. But it was her long letter to her father complaining about the party’s weaknesses that was leaked to the press, which had set the ball rolling. She had taken potshots at her brother and other leaders, calling them devils around KCR, which had accelerated the rift.
She had accused the party leaders of trying to merge the BRS with the BJP. Since KCR had always indicated his son KT Rama Rao would be his political heir, the sibling rivalry only distanced Kavitha not only within the party but also from her father. Only last month, she was removed from the post of president of the Singareni coal miners’ union affiliated to the BRS.
Congress MP Kiran Kumar Chamala suggested that Kavitha should go to any of the investigative agencies and reveal all the details about the irregularities committed in the Kaleshwaram case.
BJP Spokesperson NV Subhas said, “In the BRS family fights, corruption charges and disciplinary actions all run in parallel. The only suspense is whether the audience -the people of Telangana – are still buying tickets to this stale show.”
Yesterday, after her allegations, BRS activists and party workers started unfollowing her on social media. Her PRO was removed from the official BRS WhatsApp group and his posts were deleted. Today, after the decision to suspend her was announced, BRS activists in Siddipet, which is Harish Rao’s home turf, started burning her posters. Her banners and posters were also removed from the party headquarters.
