Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned without conducting any productive business due to persistent protests by the Opposition yet again on Thursday.

The two Houses were adjourned for the day after having two mini-proceeding adjournments due to unabated protests by Opposition members over demand for discussion on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. The Opposition claims SIR drive is disenfranchising marginalized communities.

The Upper House bid farewell to outgoing members before adjourning for the day. However, the Opposition’s protests dominated the proceedings, with MPs raising slogans and carrying placards.

The Lower House was also adjourned without transacting any constructive business, as Opposition MPs continued their protests. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused the Election Commission of allowing cheating in the voter list revision process and warned that the Opposition will not let the poll panel get away with it.

The INDIA bloc MPs demanded a discussion on the SIR exercise and its potential impact on democratic rights. They also sought a rollback of the SIR exercise, citing concerns over voter disenfranchisement.

The ECI has defended the SIR process, stating it is aimed at ensuring electoral integrity by removing ineligible voters from the rolls.

The National Sports Bill was, however, introduced amidst the din in the Lok Sabha, aiming to bring the Indian cricket board, BCCI, under its purview and promote transparency and athlete-centric reforms.
