Workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) conducted hawans in parts of the country praying for the health of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee who was admitted to the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi on Monday.

The 93-year-old is undergoing treatment for urinary tract infection at the hospital and his condition is stated to be stable.

Honoured with the Bharat Ratna in 2015, Vajpayee was admitted to AIIMS on 11 June for “routine check-up” on the advice of doctors.

“Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been admitted to AIIMS today for examination and management. He is stable. A team of doctors under the supervision of Randeep Guleria, Director, AIIMS are conducting tests,” AIIMS said in its statement on Monday.

“His condition is stable. We will get the update on his health around noon,” said a hospital official on Tuesday. There is no talk about his discharge any time soon.

AIIMS issued a statement saying that Vajpayee is responding well to the treatment and that all vital parameters are stable. He will continue to be in hospital till infection is controlled.

While Congress president Rahul Gandhi was among the first few visitors, BJP leaders Vijay Goel and JP Nadda too rushed to the hospital to check on Vajpayee’s health, followed by BJP president Amit Shah.

Modi reportedly visited the hospital around 7.30 pm. He enquired about the well being of Vajpayee and met his family members, official sources said.

Union minster Rajnath Singh and senior BJP leader LK Advani too reached AIIMS late Monday evening, according to reports.

On Tuesday, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu enquired about Vajpayee’s health.

A team of senior doctors under the supervision of Randeep Guleria, Director, AIIMS, is conducting the tests on Vajpayee, who is bed-ridden for many years. Guleria, a pulmonologist (chest specialist), has been a personal physician to Vajpayee for long.

While Vajpayee’s health issues began from the time he was the Prime Minister of India, a stroke in 2009 impaired his speech.

Hardly seen in public anymore ever since, Vajpayee, who is counted among the tallest leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has been confined to a wheelchair and reportedly has difficulty in recognising people.

A parliamentarian for over four decades, Vajpayee has been elected to the Lok Sabha (the lower house of Parliament of India) ten times, and twice to the Rajya Sabha (upper house).

Vajpayee was Prime Minister briefly in 1996 and then from 1998 to 2004. He is the first and the only non-Congress leader till date who completed his full term as Prime Minister.

Born on 25 December 1924 in Gwalior, Vajpayee entered politics during the Quit India movement in 1942. He was also the first external affairs minister to deliver a speech in the UN Assembly in Hindi.
