The BJP will win the upcoming bypolls in Phoolpur and Gorakhpur with “absolute majority” as people will vote for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s development, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Friday.

“I am confident that BJP will win with absolute majority. People have not forgotten the anarchy under Samajwadi Party’s rule. They will never accept them,” Yogi Adityanath said.

“On the basis of PM Modi’s work for development people will definitely choose BJP,” he added.

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) as well as the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) have announced its support for the Samajwadi Party (SP) candidates in the March 11 bypolls to Phulpur and Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seats to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The Lok Sabha bypolls in Phoolpur in Allahabad and Gorakhpur are being seen as high stakes electoral outing for the ruling BJP as the seats were held by deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya and Adityanath.

The BJP has fielded Varanasi’s former mayor Kaushlendra Singh Patel in Phulpur while Upendra Shukla would contest from Gorakhpur.

In Phulpur, Patel, who was the mayor of Varanasi from 2006 to 2012 will take on Samajwadi Party’s Nagendra Singh Patel, a fellow OBC.

While, old party hand Shukla’s election will be crucial as the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat is prestigious for the party as Adityanath represented it for five consecutive terms.

Before this, his ‘guru’ and head of the Gorakhspeeth, Late Mahant Avaidyanath was the MP from 1989 to 1998.

For the two seats of Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party and Congress have already announced their candidates.
