The BJP on Thursday filed a complaint with the Bihar Chief Election Officer against Congress MP Rahul Gandhi over his “dance for votes” remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In its complaint, the party alleged that Gandhi’s remarks during his election rally in Muzaffarpur were “highly derogatory, indecent, and personal remarks against the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi”.

“During his public address, Shri Rahul Gandhi stated, ‘Before elections, if you ask Modi, he will dance to win votes’,” the complaint stated.

Such comments, the BJP alleged, are personal, mocking, and intended to insult the dignity of the highest constitutional office of the Republic of India.

“The above statement made by Shri Rahul Gandhi is a direct attack on the personal character and dignity of the Hon’ble Prime Minister and has no connection whatsoever with public policy or performance. It amounts to personal vilification and violates the spirit and letter of the Model Code of Conduct,” it added.

The BJP demanded an immediate and exemplary action against Rahul Gandhi for alleged violation of the Model Code of Conduct and lowering the dignity of the Prime Minister’s office through indecent and unbecoming remarks.

The BJP also urged the poll panel to “bar him from campaigning for a specified period to preserve the sanctity of democratic and electoral decorum.”

Such action, the ruling party in Bihar stated, “will serve as a deterrent against the increasing trend of personal vilification in electoral politics and will reaffirm the Election Commission’s commitment to free, fair, and dignified elections in India.”

What did Rahul Gandhi say?

On Wednesday, addressing a rally in Muzaffarpur, Rahul took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying the PM can even perform Bharatnatyam on stage for votes.

“He just wants your vote. If 200 people from the crowd ask PM Modi to dance on stage in return for votes, the dance would begin. PM Modi will start performing Bharatnatyam on stage,” he said.
