BJP chief Nitin Nabin meets SS Johl, discusses Punjab’s agrarian and fiscal challenges

BJP national president Nitin Nabin on Monday met noted agricultural economist and Padma Bhushan awardee Dr Sardara Singh Johl in Ludhiana and sought his views on Punjab’s agricultural challenges, economic situation, and policy issues, as part of the party’s outreach programme in the state.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Nabin said the interaction was held under the BJP’s ongoing ‘Sampark Abhiyan’, aimed at engaging with distinguished personalities from different fields. He described Dr Johl as one of the country’s most respected experts on agriculture and rural development.

“Dr Johl has a deep understanding of Punjab’s agrarian landscape and the challenges faced by farmers. His suggestions will be valuable not only for addressing local agricultural concerns but also for shaping policies at the national level,” Nabin said.

The meeting comes at a time when Punjab continues to grapple with issues related to farm sustainability, rural distress, and fiscal pressures. According to Dr Johl, much of the discussion focused on the state’s economic condition and the need for long-term development-oriented policies.

During the interaction, the veteran economist expressed concern over Punjab’s rising debt burden and criticised what he described as an excessive dependence on subsidy-based politics. He argued that governments should focus on strengthening infrastructure, encouraging industrial investment, and creating employment opportunities rather than expanding welfare measures.

Dr Johl said public funds should be utilised for development and economic growth, adding that policies aimed at promoting self-reliance would prove more beneficial in the long run. He urged policymakers to prioritise industrial expansion, business development, and job creation to strengthen the state’s economy.

Earlier in the day, Dr Johl had also criticised the Punjab government’s fiscal policies through a social media post. In a sarcastic remark directed at Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, he questioned the continued expansion of free welfare schemes and suggested that if the trend continued, the state might eventually consider distributing liquor free of cost as well.

In the post, Dr Johl said Mann had shared a cordial relationship with him in the past but expressed concern that extensive subsidies, including free electricity and other welfare benefits, were encouraging dependency and weakening the spirit of self-reliance among Punjabis.

Nabin was accompanied during the meeting by Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon, district BJP president Rajnish Dhiman, and state general secretary Anil Sareen. The BJP leader also presented Dr Johl with a booklet highlighting the achievements and welfare initiatives of the BJP-led Central government over the past 12 years.

Later in the day, Nabin also met Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria at Halwara Airport in Ludhiana. Sources said the two discussed the political and administrative situation in Punjab ahead of the upcoming electoral activity in the state.

Nabin concluded his three-day visit to Punjab on Monday and departed for New Delhi. Governor Kataria is also scheduled to travel to Delhi before proceeding to his home state of Rajasthan, officials said.
