The Opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Monday stepped up its attack on the BJP government over the alleged gangrape of a 13-year-old girl in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha and the controversial arrest and alleged assault of woman Sarpanch Chameli Ojha in Kendrapara, alleging a sharp deterioration in law and order and women’s safety in the state.

Addressing a press conference here, Biju Chhatra Janata Dal president Ipsita Sahu, Biju Mahila Janata Dal vice-president Bharati Singh and former State Women’s Commission chairperson Minati Behera expressed concern over what they described as a rise in crimes against women and minor girls during the BJP government’s two-year tenure.

Referring to the alleged gangrape of a minor in Rairangpur and the Chameli Ojha episode, the BJD leaders accused the government of focusing on publicity and anniversary celebrations while failing to ensure the safety of women and children.

“The government’s biggest achievement should be ensuring that women and girls feel safe,” Sahu said, adding that the recent incidents had raised serious questions about the state’s commitment to protecting vulnerable sections.

Bharati Singh claimed that women across Odisha increasingly felt insecure despite the government’s claims of promoting women empowerment. She called for effective implementation of measures such as the Nirbhaya Fund, One Stop Centres and awareness programmes aimed at preventing crimes against women.

Demanding swift action in the Mayurbhanj case, Minati Behera called for an impartial investigation, quality medical treatment, psychological counselling and financial assistance for the survivor. She also sought stringent punishment for the accused and stronger activation of fast-track courts for speedy disposal of crimes against women and children.

The BJD further urged the government to ensure proper utilisation of funds and schemes meant for the safety and welfare of women and children.

The party announced that it would intensify its statewide campaign on issues relating to women’s safety, dignity and justice under the leadership of BJD president Naveen Patnaik.
