Biplab Deb: Ducks can help raise oxygen levels in water

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb is once again trending on social media after he dropped an out of the box idea to boost rural economy. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said ducks could recycle water and increase oxygen levels in water bodies when they swim in them, which in turn benefit fish.

According to reports, the CM wants to distribute ducks in villages across Tripura to boost rural economy.

Addressing an inaugural event of a traditional boat race at an artificial lake called Rudrasagar on Monday, Deb said that he planned to distribute 50,000 ducklings to fishermen who lived near the lake.

“When ducks swim in water, oxygen level automatically increases in the waterbody. It (oxygen) gets recycled. Fish in the water will get more oxygen. They also benefit from the bird droppings. Thus, pisciculture (fish farming) will benefit and fishes will grow faster, that too in a completely organic way,” Deb said.

At the event where he flagged off a boat race, Deb said that every family must rear four to five ducks especially white ducklings.

Deb also lashed out at the Left government, which ruled the state for 25 years before the BJP came to power, for destroying poultry industry in the state.

This is not the first time that Deb’s comments have taken the social media by storm.

He has previously claimed that ancient Indians had access to the internet, and that there were artificial satellites in the Mahabharata era. His comment that Diana Hayden was “unworthy” of the Miss World title had earned him a lot of flak, and his statement that Rabindranath Tagore “gave away his Nobel Prize” in protest against the British was panned across India.
