The southwest monsoon has become active across Bihar prompting Meteorological Centre in Patna to issue yellow alert for 24 districts. The department has warned of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 km/h in several parts of the state.
Districts under yellow alert
According to the India Meteorological Department, adverse weather conditions are likely across Siwan, Saran, Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Samastipur, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Madhepura, Supaul, Saharsa, Araria, Purnea, Katihar, Kishanganj, Khagaria, Bhagalpur, Banka, Munger, Jamui, West Champaran, East Champaran, and Gopalganj districts.
Residents living in these districts have been advised to stay alert given the possibility of heavy rainfall, lightning strikes, and gusty winds over the coming days.
Green alert for southern Bihar
Meanwhile, the weather department has issued a green alert for districts across southern and south western Bihar. This indicates that no severe weather is expected in these areas at present.
While isolated cloud cover and light showers may still occur in these regions, heavy rainfall is not likely so far. The districts falling under this green alert include Patna, Jehanabad, Gaya, Nawada, Nalanda, Sheikhpura, Bhojpur, Buxar, Rohtas, Kaimur, Aurangabad, Arwal, Lakhisarai and Begusarai.
Normal day to day activities are expected to continue without major disruption in these areas.
Weather conditions in Patna
The state capital experienced light drizzle during the early morning hours, followed by sunny conditions later in the day. According to the current forecast, Patna’s maximum temperature is expected to remain between 33 and 35 degrees Celsius over the next few days.
Intermittent light rainfall along with varying cloud cover is likely to continue in the capital. This pattern is likely to bring a slight drop in temperature.
Safety advisory for residents
The Meteorological Department has issued specific safety advice for residents living in districts under the yellow alert. People have been advised to avoid taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms, given the risk posed by lightning activity.
Authorities have also asked residents to stay indoors during lightning activity whenever possible.
