Amid fears of below-normal rainfall and possible drought-like conditions during this year’s monsoon season, Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Thursday directed officials to remain fully alert and prepared for both floods and drought.

Highlighting the intense summer heat this year, the Chief Minister said all necessary preparations should be made, and people should be made aware of potential risks.

“We need to keep an eye on every situation and remain completely vigilant. If everyone works with preparedness and dedication, people will get relief during any disaster situation. Departments should work with inter-departmental coordination so that people receive proper facilities and assistance,” he said.

The Chief Minister directed ministers and officials in charge of districts to visit their respective areas, assess potential challenges, and ensure all necessary preparations are made well in advance.

“Do not let disaster turn into calamity. Extend full support to people during times of disaster. The government stands with the people. The first right over the state treasury belongs to disaster victims,” he said.

He added that the state government provides every possible assistance to those affected during flood and drought situations and instructed all concerned departments and officials to remain alert accordingly.

The Chief Minister further directed that construction work on embankments and roads in flood-prone areas be completed before May 31.

He also instructed the Disaster Management Department to maintain continuous monitoring and ensure that people do not face any difficulties. Officials were asked to complete all necessary arrangements on time, monitor groundwater levels, and ensure the availability of drinking water. In case of floods, arrangements for dry fodder for animals should also be made.

Although floods in the Kosi region and areas bordering Nepal often dominate headlines, many districts in Bihar frequently face drought-like conditions due to erratic rainfall patterns, severely affecting rural livelihoods and aggravating economic distress. The increasing frequency and severity of droughts in recent years have particularly impacted small and medium-scale farmers, leading to reduced agricultural productivity.
