Hours after the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) accused the Centre of not honouring protest assurances and threatened to launch another sit-in, the BJP-led Bihar government on Monday announced the withdrawal of FIRs against any individual who participated in protests before 6 p.m. on July 26.
In a Home Department release, the Bihar Government also said that it will release all the protesters arrested in connection with the protests related to the alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination and the consequent demand for accountability and reforms in the examination and higher education sector.
“No adverse legal action – punitive/retaliatory – shall be taken by the Government against any individual participating in the protests before 6 p.m. on 26.07.2026, across the entire state,” the state Home Department said.
The state government assured that the legal process for withdrawal of all existing First Information Reports (FIRs), criminal complaints or show-cause notices against protesters before 6 p.m. on July 26 will be initiated immediately.
“Furthermore, all the persons arrested/detained in connection with the cases registered before 6 p.m. on 26.07.2026 shall be released immediately,” the statement issued by the State Home Department’s Special Secretary, Kshtranil Singh, read.
The Bihar Government reiterated that no legal action, directly or indirectly, will be taken against the protesters in the future as well.
The development follows the Cockroach Janta Party’s warning of a fresh agitation if the government failed to honour the assurances it had given to end the protest at Jantar Mantar.
Earlier in the day, the CJP alleged breach of the agreement regarding police action against protesters.
“Hundreds of students have been arrested in Bihar and Bengal, and hundreds are being surveilled/harassed in Delhi and other states. Multiple reports are emerging in Delhi of the detention of volunteers supporting protesters with logistics,” CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka said.
He demanded that all the FIRs against the protesters be immediately withdrawn and that students be released, with no future FIRs to be filed against them, “FAILING WHICH WE WILL BE FORCED TO SIT ON PROTEST AGAIN.”
