JD(U) Mokama candidate Anant Singh was sent to Beur Jail in Patna after being remanded to 14 days’ judicial custody. He was arrested late Saturday night in connection with the murder of Jan Suraaj party supporter Dularchand Yadav in Mokama on 30 October.
Addressing a press conference in Patna on Sunday, Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar said that a joint team of the CID and district police, acting on the basis of evidence, has arrested Anant Singh along with his two associates, Manikant Thakur and Ranjit Ram alias Dimaagi.
He emphasised, “The rule of law is supreme in Bihar. No person, no matter how influential, will be considered above the law.”
“This action is based on preliminary investigation and available visuals. The Police Headquarters is closely monitoring the entire matter with full sensitivity and seriousness,” he added.
The DGP noted that the Mokama incident created a riot-like situation, and in such circumstances, everyone present at the scene bears collective responsibility. He confirmed that over 80 arrests have been made so far, and the CID and district police continue to conduct a joint investigation.
“Action will be taken against both sides involved,” he said.
Commenting on the surge of violent incidents in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections, he said the district police and CID are investigating each case jointly, and no leniency will be shown toward any criminal or disruptive activity.
“Our top priority is to ensure that the upcoming elections on 6 and 11 November are conducted peacefully and fairly. The Election Commission is being kept informed of every development in real time,” he added.
The DGP appealed to the public to refrain from spreading any caste-based or communal tensions.
