A court in Bhopal on Saturday ordered that Samarth Singh be sent to police remand for seven days to enable investigators to interrogate him in connection with the suspicious death of his wife, Twisha Sharma, in which he is the prime accused.
It is also learnt that a four-member team of doctors from All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi will conduct a second postmortem on Twisha’s body on Sunday or Monday.
Her body has been lying in the mortuary of All India Institute of Medical Sciences Bhopal, where the first postmortem was conducted on 13 May. The Madhya Pradesh High Court had on Friday ordered that a second postmortem be carried out.
Earlier on Saturday afternoon, a police team from the Katara Hills Police Station produced Samarth Singh before the district court after his medical examination at the government-run Jai Prakash Hospital.
The Bhopal Police sought a seven-day remand for Samarth, stating before the court that he was not cooperating with the investigation and needed to be interrogated further. The court accepted the police plea and granted the remand.
According to sources, the court also directed that Samarth’s passport be cancelled.
Samarth Singh is the main accused in the suspicious death case of his wife, former Miss Pune Twisha Sharma (33), who was found dead under suspicious circumstances, allegedly by hanging, on the terrace of the couple’s residence in the Katara Hills locality of Bhopal on the night of 12 May.
Samarth’s mother, Giribala Singh, is also an accused in the case. She had secured anticipatory bail from a Bhopal court a few days ago.
The Bhopal Police had taken custody of Samarth Singh from the Jabalpur Police on Friday evening and brought him to the Katara Hills Police Station at around 2 am on Saturday.
Meanwhile, following the remand order, Samarth’s advocate said they had no objection to the court’s decision as they had faith in the legal system and believed their case was valid. However, the advocate said they had opposed the police remand on the ground that nothing was to be recovered from Samarth.
The advocate added that the defence would move according to legal procedure to seek Samarth’s bail first in the Bhopal court and, if necessary, before the High Court.
