As Congress chief Rahul Gandhi blamed BJP for the raging Dalit protests on Monday, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh asked all political parties to not “politicise” the matter and help in maintaining order.

“I appeal to all political parties and groups to not politicise the matter. Don’t flame passions that mey lead to communal or caste violence,” Rajnath told reporters outside Parliament House.

“We should all work together to maintain peace and calm,” he added.

The appeal comes after the Gandhi scion earlier in the day slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for keeping Dalits on a lower pedestal.

as the Central government filed a review petition in the Supreme Court in the apex courts recent order diluting certain provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

“I wish to convey that today we’ve filed a petition on the judgement by Supreme Court on the SC/ST act,” Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

“We have filed a comprehensive review petition which will be presented before the court by the senior lawyers of the government,” he added.

On March 20, the Supreme Court ruled that the arrest of an accused under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act is not mandatory and recourse to coercive action would be only after preliminary inquiry and sanction by the competent authority.

Coupled with this, the court said, that there was no “absolute bar against grant of anticipatory bail in cases under the Atrocities Act if no prima facie case is made out or where on judicial scrutiny the complaint is found to be prima facie mala fide”.
