Bengal governor says will visit Indo-Bangladesh border to assess SIR-triggered exodus

CV Ananda Bose

Amid reports that several people are crossing onto the Bangladeshi side of the border from West Bengal, state Governor CV Ananda Bose Monday said he will visit the spot before making his own assessment of the situation.

“It has been reported that there is an exodus of people towards the India-Bangladesh border. So many interpretations are given to that. Before I make my own assessment of the situation, I want to go to the spot and have a reality check so I can frame my mind on the issue,” Bose said.

His remarks came after reports claimed that a lot of Bangladeshis are leaving West Bengal amid the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.

While the State Government has been Opposing the controversial electoral roll revision exercise, Governor Bose called it an “important process”.

“SIR is an important process, and during its execution, if there are any grievances, they will be taken care of by the Election Commission,” he said, adding “we are very optimistic that everything will go well.”
