Bengal, Delhi plays steel limelight at 59th All-India Prakash Chandra Ghosh Memorial Bengali Theatre Festival in Lucknow

The 59th All-India Prakash Chandra Ghosh Memorial Full-Length Bengali Theatre Competition organised by the Bengali Club & Youth Committee here concluded successfully with the announcement of results and prize distribution on Thursday.

The prestigious festival was held from December 20, 2025 to January 7, 2026 and witnessed participation from leading Bengali theatre groups across India.

The play “Mulakkaram”, staged by Barrackpore Chakkanthathalia Prayas Natya Gosthi from West Bengal, was adjudged the Best Performance of the competition.

The production also dominated several other categories, winning Best Director for Randhar Roy, Best Actress for Mousumi Sarkar (Kolkata), Best Supporting Actor for Sumit Saha, and Second Best Supporting Actress for Rashmi Bose.

The Second Best Performance award went to Delhi-based theatre group Japonchitra for their production “Paap”, written by noted author Samaresh Basu. The team also won accolades for Second Best Director and Best Actor, both awarded to Suhan Basu (Delhi).

The Third Position was secured by Kolkata’s Harinavi Drishya Kavya Samiti for the play “Sampatti Samarpan”, while the Fourth Position was awarded to Delhi-based Room Theatre for staging Rabindranath Tagore’s classic “Nishkriti”. The Fifth Position went to Delhi’s Dakshinayan Natya Sanstha for their play “Paper Dot Com”.

This full-length Bengali theatre competition, organised continuously for several decades, is unique in its scale and format and is the only one of its kind in India. Renowned theatre groups from Delhi, Kolkata, North 24 Parganas, Ahmedabad and other regions participated in this year’s edition.

The award ceremony was graced by Additional Chief Secretary Amit Kumar Ghosh, IAS, as the Chief Guest, who presented the awards to the winners.
The event was organised in memory of Prakash Chandra Ghosh, with his grandson and Vice President of the Club, Amit Ghosh, present on the dais. Other dignitaries included , Vice President Anakshi Sinha, Executive Secretary Trisha Sinha, Treasurer Deb Bhattacharya, Cultural Secretaries Kaushik Bose, Ashish Bhattacharya, Tapan Samanto, and Special Guest Dr Gautam Palit, Director (Projects), Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation, along with S. Dutta.
Bengali Club President Arun Kumar Banerjee said that jury panel comprised eminent theatre personalities Mukula Bandopadhyay and Utpal Kumar from Kolkata, and Indrajit Mitra and Pravir Kumar from Lucknow.
