Beijing firmly opposes US tariffs, stands with India: Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong

Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, on Thursday slammed US President Donald Trump imposition of 50 per cent tariffs on India, saying Beijing firmly opposes the Washington’s actions and stands with India.

“The US has imposed tariffs of up to 50% on India and even threatened for more. China firmly opposes it. Silence only emboldens the bully. China will firmly stand with India,” Feihong was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Asserting that both India and China are partners and not rivals, the Chinese Ambassador called for continued friendly exchanges between the neighbouring countries.

“China is willing to work with India to continue friendly exchanges in all walks of life so that people of our countries can visit each other like relatives,” he said.

Feihong also stated that both countries reached consensus on 10 points regarding the boundary issue during Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s recent visit to India.

“China is willing to work with India to continue friendly exchanges in all walks of life so that people of our countries can visit each other like relatives,” he said.

He further stated, “We should not define the border issue as the relationship between our two countries. The border issue is on one side, and cooperation between India and China is on the other side.”

Speaking about Prime Narendra Modi’s China visit later this month, Feihong stated that Beijing attaches great importance to the meeting a working group of India and China is preparing to make the visit a success.

“The visit of Prime Minister Modi to China will be a very important event not only for the SCO but for the bilateral relationship between the two countries. A working group from China and India is preparing to make this visit a successful one. We attach great importance to this visit,” he added.
