Following Friday’s violence in Bareilly over the slogan “I Love Mohammad,” the situation remains tense as police continue to crack down on those allegedly involved in inciting unrest.
In response to the escalating tensions, internet services were suspended across the city on Saturday evening, and a special investigation team (SIT) has been formed to probe the incident. The SIT has been directed to submit its report within 10 days.
According to DIG Ajay Kumar Sahni, provocative messages were widely circulated through WhatsApp groups, which played a major role in mobilizing the crowd and triggering the violence. “The situation is under control now. Strict action is being taken based on evidence,” Sahni stated.
Internet services will remain suspended for two days to prevent further unrest. Police presence has been increased in sensitive areas to maintain peace and order.
The unrest began on Friday after a call for protest by Maulana Tauqeer Raza, president of the Ittehade Millat Council. When the crowd took to the streets, police intervened, leading to stone-pelting and subsequent police retaliation. The protest turned violent, prompting a heavy deployment of security forces.
Maulana Tauqeer Raza was among eight individuals arrested by Bareilly police.
The Maulana has been sent to 14 days of judicial custody. Initially lodged in Bareilly jail, he was later transferred to Fatehgarh jail on Saturday evening. In total, 39 people have been detained for questioning.
Police have filed FIRs in five police stations against approximately 2,000 unidentified individuals. Out of 10 FIRs filed, Maulana Raza has been named in seven of them.
Commenting on the incident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took a hard stance. Speaking at a public event, he said, “The Maulana forgot who is in power. He thought he could issue threats and paralyze the city. We ensured the roads were not blocked and no curfew was imposed. We will teach such a lesson that future generations will think twice before inciting riots.”
Authorities continue to maintain a strict vigil in Bareilly.
