The Congress on Tuesday demanded resignation of Union Minister Uma Bharti after a special CBI court ordered framing of charges against her and other BJP leaders including L.K. Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and nine others in the Babri Masjid demolition case.

Congress also hoped that the trial will now begin, the law will finally take its own course and justice will be done by punishing the guilty.

"One of the accused, Uma Bharti is a Union Cabinet Minister. Having been charge sheeted, she must resign. Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) must come forward and uphold the rule of law and the Constitution," said party spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala in a statement.

"Those who are guilty must be punished in accordance with the law of the land without any fear or favour," he added.

Noting that while on December 8, 2011, the Supreme Court ordered that hearing of the case will be held on day-to-day basis, Surjewala said: "After this order, since the year 2013 till date, 185 adjournments have taken place in the case. Time for law of the land to deliver justice expeditiously and punish the guilty."

The special CBI court in Lucknow on Tuesday ordered framing of conspiracy charges against BJP leaders Advani, Joshi, Uma Bharti and nine others in the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition case but gave them bail on personal bonds.
