Senior Samajwadi Party leader and recently released from jail, Mohammad Azam Khan, has been again given Y-category security cover. Azam Khan was released from Sitapur jail 20 days ago after he spent nearly 23 months in prison.
Sources here said that hundreds of people are arriving in Rampur daily to meet Azam Khan, and the administration has tightened security measures in anticipation of the large crowds.
A senior police officer here on Sunday confirmed that, “Azam Khan’s Y-category security was restored on Friday evening. Guards and gunmen have been deployed around him since Saturday morning.”
Before going to jail, Azam Khan had Y-plus category security, which was revoked upon his imprisonment. Now, he has been granted security again.
After his release from jail, the SP leader travelled from Sitapur to his ancestral home in Rampur in a convoy of about 100 cars and was given a grand welcome in Rampur.
Since his return from jail, Azam Khan’s home has been flooded with visitors. Many prominent leaders, including Akhilesh Yadav and Swami Prasad Maurya, have visited him. Crowds are constantly present outside his home.
In such a situation, Azam Khan’s security remained a challenge for the police administration. In view of this, Y-plus security was reinstated for Azam Khan on Friday, and the Rampur police received a written order for this on Saturday.
