Some called it a side-effect of “switching parties”, while others demanded strict action but Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s insensitive comment that people suffer from life-threatening diseases because of sins committed in the past invited the wrath of many even as he vociferously defended himself.

At a function organised in Guwahati on Wednesday, Sarma had said, “God makes us suffer when we sin. Sometimes we come across young men getting inflicted with cancer or young men meeting with accidents.”

“If you observe the background you will come to know that it’s divine justice. Nothing else. We have to suffer that divine justice,” he added.

Congress leader P Chidambaram was among the first to slam the minister, saying “that is what switching parties does to a person”, Sarma being a former Congress leader who switched to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the Assam Assembly elections.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala exhorted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to punish the minister.

“Now, BJP Minister & Convenor abuses India’s cancer patients & their families. Mr. PM, as you tacitly support such lampooning of the brave hearts who fight cancer every second of their life, when will you act and sack such elements?” he tweeted.

As others too joined in criticise the minister, Sarma defended his comment saying he was just quoting the Bhagavad Gita.

“Do not belittle Hindu philosophy in such simplistic way. If you call me anytime to your studio,I will argue with you that karmic law do exist. You can not written of teachings of Bhagavadgita by using the word pumpkin of the day etc,” he said in a reply to a tweet calling him a “pumpkin”.

“Should I deserve this tweet for quoting Bhagavadgita before a new batch of teachers and asking them to teach poor students sincerely. I do not know from when quoting Hindu philosophy to inspire a batch of teachers suddenly become a sin in this country.”
