The BJP has constituted an 18-member core committee for its Assam unit as part of its preparations for the 2026 state assembly elections.
The announcement comes just ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s two-day visit to the state, during which he is scheduled to meet the committee to review the poll preparations and fine-tune the party’s strategy.
State BJP president Dilip Saikia said the panel was formed with the approval of national party president J.P. Nadda.
The committee brings together top state and national leaders, including Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Pabitra Margherita, national secretary Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, senior state ministers Ashok Singhal, Ranoj Pegu and Ranjeet Kumar Dass, and former state president Bhabesh Kalita.
The committee also features three state vice presidents—Ashok Bhattarai, Rekharani Das Boro, and Moon Swarnakar—as well as five general secretaries—G.R. Ravindra Raju, Diplu Ranjan Sarmah, Pallab Lochan Das, Rituparna Baruah, and Anup Barman.
Former MP Rajdeep Roy is also part of the team. Special invitees include Assam BJP in-charge Harish Dwivedi, Northeast coordinator Sambit Patra, and co-coordinator V. Muralidharan.
According to party leaders, the core committee will play a crucial role in formulating strategy, coordinating across party levels, and mobilising grassroots workers in order to consolidate BJP’s organisational strength.
The BJP, which stormed to power in Assam in 2016 and retained it with a thumping majority in 2021, is aiming for a third consecutive term in 2026.
With the opposition Congress attempting to revive its presence under leaders such as Gaurav Gogoi and the newly formed regional alliances in Upper Assam, the saffron party’s central leadership is keen to ensure that organisational preparedness does not slip.
Shah’s visit is being seen as both a morale booster for the rank-and-file and a signal of the high stakes Assam holds for the BJP in the Northeast, where the party has positioned itself as the dominant political force since the past decade.
