Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi on Monday, May 4, suffered a major defeat against BJP candidate Hitendra Nath Goswami by a margin of 23,182 votes from the Jorhat Assembly constituency, as per the official data shared by the Election Commission of India.
Overall, Goswami polled 69,439 votes in the 2026 Assembly elections in Assam, while Gogoi was restricted to a mere 46,257 votes. The one-sided victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam shows a strong performance by the party, which has easily managed to consolidate its hold in the region.
Other candidates in the fray lagged significantly behind. Pranab Priyankush Dutta of the Aam Aadmi Party managed to get only 701 votes, while Hemanta Kumar Pegu of the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) received 581 votes. NOTA (None of the Above) accounted for 1,319 votes.
The result in Jorhat is being looked upon as a wider electoral trend in Assam, where the BJP appears to have gained substantial support.
Political observers believe that development-focussed campaigning along with organisational strength played a key role in shaping voter preferences in the constituency.
Voting for the Assam Assembly elections 2026 was held on April 9, with an impressive voter turnout of 85.96 per cent from an electorate of more than 2.50 crore.
In total, 722 candidates were in the fray, including 59 women contenders. The Congress fielded the highest number of candidates at 99, followed by the BJP with 90.
