Asom Divas 2025: The history and significance of Sukaphaa’s arrival in Assam

Asom Divas 2025

This morning, Assam woke up to deep emotion and celebration of Asom Divas, the annual tribute to Chaolung Sukaphaa, the first Ahom king and the founder of the Ahom kingdom.

Across the state, people are sharing stories of heritage. They are remembering their history and honouring the leader who shaped what we know as Assam today.

Below is a look at the history, meaning, significance of this important day.

Asom Divas: History and meaning

Asom Divas or Sukaphaa Divas is observed every year on December 2. The day marks the arrival of Chaolung Sukaphaa in Assam in the year 1228 after a long and difficult journey across the Patkai Hills.

Sukaphaa was born a prince of the Su/Tsu (Tiger) clan in Mong Mao, an area that today lies within the Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture in China. His path to his father’s throne was blocked due to the birth of a cousin forcing him to leave his homeland. What followed was a remarkable 13-year journey through forests, mountains and unfamiliar territories.

When he finally reached Namrup in present-day Assam, he began building a kingdom that would survive for almost 600 years: the Ahom Kingdom. Sukaphaa did something rare in medieval times. He did not conquer by violence. Instead he built friendships with different tribal groups. He understood their customs, united people who spoke different languages and came from different traditions.

His ability to bring together diverse communities is why Assam lovingly calls him Chaolung Sukaphaa. Chao means lord, and Lung means great.

In 1996, the Government of Assam declared December 2 as Asom Divas to honour his unmatched contribution to the Assam identity.

Asom Divas significance

Asom Divas is not just a holiday. It is a reminder of Assam’s colourful culture. Across the state traditional music, tribal dances, folk performances take centre stage. From the graceful Bagurumba to the energetic Bihu and Bhortal dances, the day becomes a festival of rhythm and joy.

Sukaphaa’s legacy is all about the peaceful relationships he formed with the indigenous tribes. He treated everyone with respect. He ensured that communities lived together in harmony. This helped create the foundation of what we today call Bor Asom, Greater Assam.

The most powerful message of Asom Divas is unity. Sukaphaa’s success in bringing together so many different groups despite political and cultural challenges shows how strong a society can become when people choose understanding over conflict.

Amit Shah’s Asom Divas wish

Union Home Minister Amit Shah shared a message on social media today sending greetings to the people of Assam.

He wrote: “Warm wishes to our sisters and brothers of Assam on #AsomDivas. This occasion commemorates the glory of the Ahom era and fortifies our commitment to protecting the rich culture of Assam, in which every Indian takes great pride.”

He added that in the last nine years, the Modi-led NDA government has brought peace to the region. Shah expressed confidence that this progress would continue with full strength.
