As BJP forms first govt in Bengal, memorial for slain party workers set up at Brigade Parade Ground

As the BJP is set to form its first-ever government in West Bengal on Saturday, the saffron party has erected a memorial at the Brigade Parade Ground, where the swearing-in ceremony is being held, to honour the party workers killed in political violence in the state.

Names of deceased BJP workers have been written on a temporary wall decorated with white and yellow flowers.

BJP’s West Bengal Legislative Party Leader Suvendu Adhikari, a TMC turncoat, will take oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal today.

The BJP defeated Mamata Banerjee-led TMC in the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections, winning 207 of the 293 seats as fresh elections have been ordered in one constituency.

While the elections this year remain largely peaceful, incidents of post-poll violence have been reported across the state.

Three BJP workers have reportedly been killed in the state since May 4, when the results were declared.

The latest was Chandranath Rath, the personal assistant of the CM-elect Suvendu Adhikari, who was gunned down in North 24 Parganas district’s Madhyamgram on Thursday night.

While an investigation is underway, Adhikari had remarked that Rath was killed because “he was my aide and I defeated Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur.”
