Kashmir: Army soldier providing security to BRO convoy stoned to death

Army soldier Rajendra Singh, one of the three soldiers killed in Kashmir in the past 24 hours, died due to injuries he received in stone-pelting by miscreants in Anantnag area of South Kashmir.

An Army spokesman said on Friday 22-year-old Sepoy Rajendera Singh was part of a Quick Reaction Team (QRT) which was providing protection to a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) convoy on Thursday when the incident occurred.

Around 6 pm, when the convoy was passing through the Anantnag bypass tri-junction near National Highway-44, a few youths hurled stones at the vehicle and Sepoy Rajendra Singh was injured after being hit by a stone directly on the head. He was provided immediate first aid and evacuated to the Srinagar based 92 Base Hospital where he succumbed to the injury.

Sepoy Rajendra Singh hailed from village Badena in Pithoragarh, Uttrakhand, and had joined Army in 2016. He is survived by his parents.

The top Army brass paid befitting tributes on Friday to the three of its comrades who attained martyrdom during separate operations and incidents in Tral and Anantnag on 25 October and in Sopore on 26 October.

In a solemn ceremony in the Badami Bagh Cantonment in Srinagar, Lt Gen AK Bhatt, GOC Chinar Corps, and all ranks paid homage to the martyrs. DGP Dilbag Singh and representatives from various security agencies also joined in paying their last respects to the martyrs.

Martyr Lance Naik Brajesh Kumar, 32, sustained splinter injuries during a fierce operation in Malgunipura (Sopore) on 26 October during which two terrorists were also eliminated. Martyr Lance Naik Brajesh Kumar had joined Army in 2004 and hailed from Nanawin village in Una district of Himachal Pradesh. He is survived by his wife and a daughter.

Martyr Sepoy Ngamsiamliana attained martyrdom during a standoff attack on an Army Camp in Luragam village of Tral, Pulwama on 25 October. Sepoy Ngamsiamliana, 23, hailed from Rengtekawn village in Kolasib, Mizoram, and had joined the Army in 2013. He is survived by his parents.

Mortal remains of the martyrs were flown for last rites to their native places, where they would be laid to rest with full military honours.
