Separatist Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was on Friday put under house arrest and not allowed to proceed to Jamia Masjid to offer sermons as the Hurriyat leaders had given call for protests against the US administration declaring United Jehad Council (UJC) chief Syed Salahuddin a “global terrorist”.

The three top separatists, Syed Alishah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik had asked the people to stage protests after the Friday prayers against the Pakistan based Hizbul Mujahideen leader Syed Salahuddin being declared a global terrorist by the USA.

A team of policemen stopped Mirwaiz from leaving his residence for the Jamia Masjid and informed him that he has been placed under house arrest.

Authorities had imposed curfew-like restrictions downtown Srinagar to prevent violence. All schools and colleges remained closed. Police said the step was taken as a precautionary measure as there was apprehension of law and order problem being triggered by the separatists.

The district magistrate imposed restrictions under the Section 144 Cr.PC in five police station areas of Nowhatta, Maharaj Gunj, Rainawari, Khanyar and Safakadal to prevent any untoward incident.

The authorities have not been taking any chance following lynching of a DSP by a mob at the doorsteps of the Jamia Masjid. Gates of the Jamia Masjid were locked and the police did not allow people to gather for Friday prayers.

Reports said that youth clashed with security forces in Sopore. They were protesting against the US action of declaring Salahuddin a global terrorist. The youth pelted stones at security forces when they were stopped from marching towards the main bazaar after offering Friday prayers.
