The BJP has described the India–EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) as a “historic step”, highlighting its potential to create opportunities for 200 crore people in India and Europe—nations with one fourth of the GDP and affecting the economy of the entire world.
Doors for trade and industry will open for India in around 50 more countries, BJP leader Rajesh Agarwal wrote, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “visionary leadership” and India’s rising influence, challenging the traditional hegemony of global powers.
Celebrated as the “mother of all partnerships” and the “mother of all deals,” by PM Modi, the deal will open up opportunities for people and businesses on both sides, transforming India’s global trade position, particularly amid ongoing trade tensions under US President Donald Trump. Beyond its economic benefits—boosting sectors such as manufacturing, textiles, and services—the FTA is also expected to strengthen the saffron party’s financial and narrative position ahead of upcoming Assembly elections, while delivering a major diplomatic win for Prime Minister Modi.
“Along with economic benefits, the deal will help neutralise opposition attacks on foreign policy amid Trump’s trade tensions and elevate India’s rules-based trade profile over US unpredictability. It bolsters PM Modi’s political standing, particularly against Trump’s repeated criticisms of India’s trade practices and other issues,” according to a BJP leader.
The BJP is expected to build its election campaign for the upcoming elections around the deal, highlighting growth prospects in textiles, manufacturing, and services, and appealing to voters in labour-intensive states to reinforce PM Modi’s image as a leader driving inclusive opportunities. Aligned with ‘Make in India’ and recent FTAs, it strengthens his profile as an economic reformer, securing global wins amid US tariff pressures.
Political analysts, too, agree that the agreement is far more than a commercial instrument. “It represents a deliberate strategic posture—a declaration of intent to build prosperity, supply-chain resilience, and deeper convergence in a volatile world. It positions PM Modi as a savvy global leader who is securing alternatives for India amid US threats that were portrayed in a vulnerable position. It also places the BJP in a favourable position against rivals, underlining growth and stability in poll-bound states,” they say.
