Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that any kind of violence in Manipur is unfortunate. He added that violence between the Kuki and Meitei communities is a “great injustice” to the ancestors and our future generations.

The PM stated that India has to take Manipur forward on the path of peace and development, and we have to do it together.

He further said that the country should take inspiration from Manipur’s contribution in the freedom struggle of India and in the defence of India.

Modi said, “It was the land of Manipur where the Indian National Army hoisted the Indian flag for the first time. Netaji Subhash called Manipur the gateway to India’s freedom. This land has given many heroic sacrifices.”

“Our government is moving forward, taking inspiration from every such great personality of Manipur. Our government has taken another big step. Mount Harriet in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has been renamed as Mount Manipur. This is a tribute of 140 crore countrymen of India to the Manipuri freedom fighters,” he further stated.

PM Modi, who interacted with locals during his visit to Imphal and Churachandpur in Manipur today, also inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for development projects worth over ₹8,500 crore.

These include the Manipur Urban Roads, Drainage and Asset Management Improvement initiative valued at ₹3,647 crore, and the ₹550-crore Manipur Infotech Development (MIND) project, according to an official statement.

He also launched projects for nine working women’s hostels with an outlay of ₹142 crore, along with super-speciality and healthcare facilities to be set up at a cost of ₹105 crore.

PM Modi laid the foundation stones for several key projects in Manipur, including infrastructure development in and around Polo Ground at a cost of ₹30 crore, and strengthening facilities in 120 schools across all 16 districts with an investment of ₹134 crore.

The initiatives also cover rural connectivity, education, and tourism projects worth ₹102 crore, along with the construction of a multipurpose indoor stadium costing ₹36 crore at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal. Additionally, the upgradation of NH-102A in the Tengnoupal section, valued at ₹502 crore, was launched.

Before arriving in Manipur, Modi inaugurated development projects worth ₹9,000 crore in Mizoram and virtually addressed a public rally from Lengpui Airport near Aizawl, as heavy rain prevented him from reaching the Lammual Ground venue.

In Mizoram, he dedicated the Bairabi-Sairang railway line to the nation, bringing the landlocked state onto India’s railway map for the first time. Calling it a historic day, he said the line would connect Aizawl with major metropolitan cities.
