Andhra Pradesh: Nine women, one boy die in stampede at Venkateswara Swamy temple in Srikakulam; PM Modi condoles

Ten people, including nine women, died after a stampede broke out at the Venkateswara Swamy temple at Kasibugga, in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district, on Saturday, on the occasion of Ekadashi. The tenth victim of the unfortunate tragedy was a boy. The number of casualties was confirmed by the Governor of Andhra Pradesh, S Abdul Nazeer.  Reports said that 20 people were injured. The incident occurred due to overcrowding and panic among pilgrims.

After the deadly accident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday took to the social media website X to share his condolences over the death of pilgrims in the Andhra Pradesh temple stampede. He said that an ex gratia of Rs. 2 lakh each from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of those who lost their lives.

In the post earlier today, he said, “Pained by the stampede in Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh. My thoughts are with those who have lost their near and dear ones. I pray that the injured recover soon. An ex gratia of Rs. 2 lakh each from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of those who lost their lives. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000.” 

Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu, earlier today, in a post on social media website X, said, “The stampede incident at the Venkateswara Temple in Kasibugga in Srikakulam district has caused a shock. The death of devotees in this tragic incident is extremely heartbreaking… I have instructed the officials to provide speedy and proper treatment to those who have been injured…”

The injured were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment, as apprised by the CM. Police have also rushed to the spot, he added.

Meanwhile, Minister and TDP leader Nara Lokesh on the social media website X expressed his deepest sorrow for the casualties that took place in the temple stampede. He said, “The stampede at the Kasibugga Venkateswara Temple has caused the deaths of several devotees, plunging us into profound shock.”

He added, “A deep sorrow has gripped us on this Ekadashi day. I extend my deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.”

The government is providing better medical treatment to those injured in the stampede, he added.

“As soon as the information was received, I spoke with the officials, Minister Achchennaidu from the district, and local MLA Gauthu Shirish. I have instructed that immediate assistance be provided to the affected individuals,” he stated.
