A high alert was sounded in Amritsar on Friday after 15 prominent private schools received threats via email claiming they would be bombed. The district administration acted promptly on the alerts and ordered the immediate shutdown of all schools across the city.
As per officials, school administrations apprised the police of the emails they received early in the day without delay.
Parents rush to schools, buses recalled
Simultaneously, parents were called to pick up their children, leading to a sudden rush outside the school gates. All school buses were recalled to ensure that students reached home safely.
The situation triggered panic among parents, while children were evacuated under tight supervision.
Bomb squads deployed, premises sealed
Acting quickly on the threat, police sealed the affected areas and deployed bomb disposal squads and fire brigade units at the schools.
No one was allowed to enter the school premises as officers carried out room-to-room inspections. Meanwhile, the cyber cell has started tracing the source of the emails. Authorities have not yet identified the sender or any organisation behind the threats.
Urban and rural schools affected
As per the initial statement of the Amritsar Commissionerate Police, both urban as well as rural schools received the suspicious emails.
A gazetted officer has been positioned at each school, and anti-sabotage checks are underway.
Officials urge calm, schools remain shut
Officials urged residents to remain calm, noting that in past incidents of a similar nature, such threats were traced back to mischievous students.
However, until the picture becomes clearer, the Deputy Commissioner ordered the complete closure of all schools as a precautionary measure.
