In a major breakthrough in the ongoing drive to make Punjab a safe and secure state, in line with the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Amritsar Rural Police, in a joint operation with Central Agencies, apprehended two individuals linked to cross-border handlers and recovered two hand grenades from their possession, Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav said here on Tuesday.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Davinder Singh, a resident of village Chungh in Tarn Taran district, and Rajwinder Singh, a resident of Sursingh in Tarn Taran. Apart from the hand grenades, police teams also impounded their Hyundai Verna sedan bearing registration number PB 46 AL 7846.

DGP Gaurav Yadav said preliminary investigations revealed that the accused were acting on the directions of their foreign-based handlers. The recovery of the hand grenades points to a larger conspiracy aimed at disturbing peace and public order in the border state, he added.

The DGP said that further investigations are underway to establish both forward and backward linkages in the case and identify other associates involved in the network.

Sharing operational details, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amritsar Rural Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal said that police teams had received credible intelligence that Davinder Singh and Rajwinder Singh had retrieved a consignment of explosive material sent by their handlers from across the border and were conspiring to carry out a terror activity to disrupt peace and harmony in the state.

Acting swiftly, police teams, under the supervision of DSP (Investigation) Gurinderpal Singh Nagra and DSP Attari Yadwinder Singh, launched an intelligence-led operation and apprehended the duo in the Khasa area, he said. During a search of their Verna car, two hand grenades were recovered.

The SSP said that preliminary investigations suggest that both accused were awaiting directions from their foreign-based handlers to execute the planned terror activity. Further investigations are ongoing, he added.

He further said that the probe has revealed that both accused were introduced to the foreign-based handler by Harwant Singh alias Harry, an inmate currently lodged in Amritsar Jail.

The accused had allegedly smuggled several weapons and explosives to associates of Harwant Singh, he said, adding that police teams have recovered a mobile phone belonging to Harwant alias Harry from Amritsar Jail and a separate case has been registered in this regard.

In this connection, FIR No. 243 dated June 9, 2026, under Sections 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act, has been registered at Police Station Gharinda in Amritsar Rural.
