Police in Maharashtra’s Amravati have arrested four persons so far in the Paratwada minors’ alleged abuse and blackmail case, with a Special Investigation Team (SIT) now leading the probe and more arrests expected.

The case has triggered widespread concern after details emerged suggesting the alleged exploitation may have affected a large number of minor girls. According to inputs reported by IANS, the primary accused is suspected of targeting over 180 minors and recording hundreds of objectionable videos, pointing to the possible scale of the crime and the likelihood of a wider network.

SIT formed, more arrests likely as probe intensifies

Amravati Rural Superintendent of Police Vishal Anand Singuri said the investigation has been handed over to a dedicated SIT comprising 11 officers and around 40 personnel.

“We have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT)… the investigation will remain within the SIT… This team includes a total of 11 officers and approximately 40 staff members, including two female officers. The Police Inspectors (PI) of the Local Crime Branch (LCB) and Cyber Cell are also part of this team. We have arrested a total of 4 accused so far. The process of arresting 2 more accused is underway. We are interrogating the other 4 accused… We have seized 5 mobile phones…,” he said.

Police said digital evidence is being examined, with the Cyber Cell involved in tracking the possible circulation of content online.

Allegations point to organised exploitation, online blackmail

According to IANS, the main accused, identified as Mohammad Ayaz alias Tanveer, allegedly lured minor girls through social media platforms, including WhatsApp and Snapchat, before taking some of them to cities such as Mumbai and Pune.

Investigators suspect that objectionable videos were recorded and later used to blackmail the victims. There are also indications that some content may have been circulated online, raising concerns about the involvement of other individuals or a larger network.

Police appeal for confidentiality, outreach to victims

Amid the sensitivity of the case, the SP urged the public not to reveal the identity of the victims and assured complete confidentiality.

“I also appeal to everyone not to disclose the identity of the victims under any circumstances. Lastly, I have a request for the victims and their families: Please contact the appointed female officers, whose numbers have already been circulated, in a confidential manner. You can choose a location and time convenient for you to record your statements with them. We will ensure your statements are sealed and kept confidential to protect your identities. I take personal responsibility for this,” he added.

Protests, bandh and political reactions add pressure

The case has sparked protests in Paratwada and nearby areas, with reports of a shutdown being observed and heavy police deployment to maintain law and order.

AIMIM leader Waris Pathan called for strict action and urged political restraint.

“We have no connection with him (accused)…Strict action should be taken against those involved in the incident; they should be put behind bars…The BJP leaders should not spoil the atmosphere and let the police do the investigation…,” Pathan told ANI.

Bulldozer action against accused’s property

Earlier, local authorities used bulldozers to demolish illegal portions of the primary accused’s residence following his arrest. Officials said further action may follow, with additional encroachments identified and notices issued.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and efforts are focused on identifying all those involved and establishing the full extent of the alleged exploitation.
