Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan slammed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah’s comments on the Sabarimala temple issue and the state government’s handling of the protests against the Supreme Court verdict.

Vijayan, 74, said on Saturday that Shah’s remarks, which were delivered during a BJP rally in Kannur, were against the constitution.

“Amit Shah’s statements in Kannur are against constitution and law of the land. It’s a clear intention of their agenda of not to guarantee the fundamental rights. This shows the agenda of the RSS and Sangh Parivar,” Vijayan was quoted as saying by ANI.

The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPIM) leader said that the BJP chief’s message to his party workers is to sabotage the mandate of the people of Kerala.

“Amit Shah, who threatened to topple our government, should remember that this government came to power not at the mercy of BJP but the people’s mandate. His message is to sabotage the people’s mandate,” Vijayan added.

Earlier today, Shah, who inaugurated a new party office in Kannur, accused the state government of of creating violence in the name of the Supreme Court verdict.

He said that the BJP will stand behind devotees of Ayyappa on the Sabarimala issue, while warning the state government not to hurt the feelings of the devotees.

“Kerala government is running a cycle of suppressing the devotees of Sabarimala temple. More than 2000 activists and workers from BJP, RSS and other organisations have been arrested,” Shah said.

The 54-year-old BJP chief also accused that the Kerala government of removing the “real devotees from inside the Sabarimala temple who fought for their right”.

“How can one fundamental right overwrite the other fundamental right?” he asked while pointing out that there are many temples in India where men are barred from entry.
