The Joint Parliamentary Committee on ‘One Nation, One Election’ has summoned Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar for December 4.
While former law minister P P Chaudhury chairs the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on ‘One Nation, One Election’, the panel was constituted under the chairmanship of former President Ramnath Kovind.
Various legal, constitutional, and political issues have also emerged surrounding the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal.
The parliamentary committee has engaged in discussions with various experts from relevant sectors over the past few months regarding this matter.
From these discussions, several complex aspects have also emerged. In this context, the extent of authority that should be granted to the election commission has become a focal point of debate, making Thursday’s meeting particularly significant.
On August 25, 1965, the ‘Committee on Subordinate Legislation’ of the Parliament summoned the then Chief Election Commissioner of the country. This marks the first instance of a parliamentary committee calling upon a chief election commissioner.
Additionally, other senior officials of the commission will also present their statements on that day. On the same day, members of the 23rd Law Commission have also been summoned.
The Chairperson of the Joint Parliamentary Committee regarding ‘One Nation One Election’, MP and former Law Minister P. P. Choudhury, stated that there is a 39-member committee in the Joint Parliamentary Committee on ‘One Nation One Election’, comprising 27 members from the Lok Sabha and 12 members from the Rajya Sabha.
