Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a meeting of the Council of Ministers at Sewa Teerth in the national capital on Thursday evening, in what is being seen as a significant review of the government’s performance amid growing economic and geopolitical challenges.
Sources said the meeting, scheduled for 5 pm, is expected to bring together Union Cabinet ministers, ministers of state with independent charge, and ministers of state for a broad assessment of governance priorities and emerging concerns.
The meeting comes at a time when rising global crude oil prices and uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz have triggered fresh worries over India’s energy security. Fuel prices have already seen two hikes within a week, while tensions linked to the West Asia conflict continue to impact international markets and shipping routes.
Government sources indicated that the discussions are likely to include economic preparedness, energy resilience and coordination across ministries as the Centre navigates inflationary pressures and global instability.
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi had urged citizens to contribute towards reducing India’s dependence on imported fuel. He appealed to people to use public transport more frequently, adopt carpooling, shift freight movement towards railways and encourage wider use of electric vehicles.
Fuel prices rise for second time in a week
Petrol and diesel prices were revised upwards again on Tuesday across several cities.
In Delhi, petrol prices rose by 87 paise to Rs 98.64 per litre, while diesel became costlier by 91 paise and is now retailing at Rs 91.58 per litre. Similar increases were reported in Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata.
The latest revision came days after oil companies increased prices by Rs 3 per litre on May 15.
Global crude prices have remained volatile following the US-Israel-Iran conflict earlier this year, which disrupted maritime movement around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes.
Ministers’ meeting follows PM Modi’s five-nation tour
Thursday’s meeting also comes soon after Prime Minister Modi returned from his five-nation official visit covering the UAE, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy.
During his Italy visit, Modi held bilateral talks with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, after which India and Italy elevated ties to a “Special Strategic Partnership”.
The two leaders reviewed progress under the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-29 and discussed cooperation in trade, defence, investments, technology, education, connectivity and the blue economy.
The Council of Ministers meeting is expected to set the tone for the government’s priorities in the coming months as it deals with both domestic economic concerns and an increasingly uncertain global environment.
