In another case, an unidentified person broke the glasses and garland on the statue of the Mahatma Gandhi as it was vandalised at Kannur in Kerala at about 7 am on Thursday.

According to media reports, a man was seen by locals targeting the statue.

In the view of raging violence, police across various states have heightened vigil around iconic statues.

PM Modi on Wednesday had spoken to the Home Minister Rajnath Singh and expressed strong disapproval in connection with the cases of statues vandalised in Tamil Nadu and Tripura.

After the statue of Vladimir Lenin was razed, the statue of rationalist leader EV Ramasamy, popularly known as ‘Periyar’, was vandalised on Tuesday in Vellore. Two persons have been arrested at Tirupattur in Vellore for allegedly vandalising the Periyar statue.

In the Meerut city of Uttar Pradesh also, Ambedkar’s statue was damaged.
