The suspension of eight Opposition Members of Parliament is set to be revoked after an all-party meeting, chaired by Om Birla, Speaker of the Lok Sabha, reached a consensus aimed at restoring normal functioning in the House. The issue is expected to be formally taken up after Question Hour in the Lower House on Tuesday.

According to informed sources, leaders from several political parties agreed during the meeting that the suspension of the eight MPs — imposed earlier during the ongoing Budget session — should be withdrawn to ease tensions and allow parliamentary proceedings to resume smoothly.

The MPs whose suspension is set to be revoked are Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Hibi Eden, Dean Kuriakose, Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, B. Manickam Tagore, Prashant Yadaorao Padole, Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy and S. Venkatesan.

The eight lawmakers had earlier been suspended after a motion moved by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju was adopted by the House amid disruptions during the session.

‎Sources present at the meeting said the decision to revoke the suspension came after leaders from both the government and Opposition assured the Speaker that members would adhere to parliamentary norms and ensure orderly conduct in the House.

‎“Leaders of all parties agreed that the dignity and established traditions of Parliament must be upheld. It was collectively decided that members from either side will not cross over to the opposite side in the Well of the House, tear papers and throw them towards the Chair, or climb onto the officials’ table,” a source familiar with the discussions said.

‎Another parliamentary source said the meeting stressed the importance of maintaining decorum and preventing repeated disruptions that could derail legislative business. “There was broad agreement that all members should follow established parliamentary decorum and ensure that such incidents are not repeated in the future,” the source added.

The development comes after repeated disruptions in recent days had stalled proceedings in the Lower House, prompting efforts from the Speaker to bring both sides together and restore normal functioning.

‎Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha Secretariat issued a bulletin reminding members about maintaining decorum within the Parliament Estate and complying with rules laid down by the Speaker.

The bulletin referred to Direction 124A(2)(iii) of the Speaker’s directions, which prohibits certain activities within the Parliament House complex to ensure that the premises and passages remain accessible for members.

According to the advisory, members are not permitted to carry firearms, banners, placards, lathis, spears, swords, sticks or brickbats inside the Parliament Estate. MPs have also been repeatedly advised not to bring or display posters, placards or banners within Parliament.

The Secretariat also cautioned that in some recent instances, posters and placards displayed inside Parliament contained AI-generated portraits, pictures and slogans of a derogatory nature.

‎“Honourable Members have once again been advised to strictly comply with Direction 124A(2)(iii) and other relevant rules to avoid disciplinary action in case of any violation,” a parliamentary source said, referring to the bulletin.

‎The consensus reached at Monday’s meeting is expected to ease tensions between the treasury benches and the Opposition and help ensure smoother proceedings in Parliament for the remainder of the Budget session.
