Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday mounted a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party over the West Bengal Assembly election results, alleging that the outcome was “produced arbitrarily” and ridiculing the party’s leadership selection process with a pointed, satirical remark on women’s representation.

In a post on his WhatsApp channel, Yadav said, “When the results in West Bengal have been produced arbitrarily, then—going by BJP’s tradition—the Chief Minister too will be chosen arbitrarily.” He added, in a sarcastic tone, that there was a “special demand” that the proverbial “parchi” (slip) used to decide leadership should this time carry the name of a figure who, “since mythological times, has symbolized patriarchal negative thinking and the exploitation of women.”

Without naming anyone directly, Yadav layered his critique with an ideological reference, remarking that the same figure had once been cited by socialist thinker Ram Manohar Lohia in advice to Indian women, underscoring the political undertones of his statement.

He further said that such a move should be seen “in the context of women’s reservation,” a comment widely read as a dig at the BJP’s messaging on women’s empowerment and its broader political positioning.

The remarks come amid heightened exchanges following the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections, which have drawn strong reactions across party lines. While the BJP has defended the electoral process and highlighted its performance, opposition leaders have questioned both the outcome and the narrative surrounding it.

Yadav’s intervention shows the Samajwadi Party’s continued attempt to sharpen its national critique of the BJP, often blending satire with ideological commentary to challenge the ruling party’s decisions and political framework.
