Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has appealed to renowned environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk, who is on a hunger strike along with supporters of the Cockroach Janata Party, to end his fast.
Expressing concern over Wangchuk’s deteriorating health, Akhilesh Yadav said the BJP government was “corrupt and heartless” and that it placed no value on human life.
In a post on X, he said: “Our humble request and sincere appeal to Sonam Wangchuk is that he end his fast. His life is precious to the entire world because he is as committed to humanity, the environment and democracy as he is to truth.”
He further said: “The BJP government he is fasting to awaken represents a corrupt and insensitive system. Its heartlessness makes every sacrifice meaningless. Therefore, any expectation of morality or a change of heart from BJP leaders is futile. For them, no one’s life has any value. Money is paramount. They are intoxicated by the wealth they have accumulated through corruption. It is futile to expect change from them. Those who are arrogant lack refinement. How can those who, in their greed for power, even loot temples understand the importance of ‘Satyagraha’? They have nothing to do with the future of the youth or the dreams of their parents and families. They are selfish people.”
Akhilesh Yadav added: “May your courage and moral strength continue to inspire every true Indian to defeat and permanently remove the sinful and undemocratic forces that are strangling democracy. May you always remain a beacon of hope in the struggle for the country, its youth, democracy and the environment. This is our wish and prayer.”
It may be noted that Sonam Wangchuk is on an indefinite hunger strike. He is observing a fast unto death along with young protesters demanding the resignation of the Education Minister.
As his health continues to deteriorate, SP president Akhilesh Yadav has appealed to him to call off his fast.
