Ajit Pawar dies in Baramati plane crash; last rites at 11 am tomorrow, AAIB starts probe

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar and four others were killed after a charter plane carrying them crash-landed in Baramati on Wednesday morning, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said.

According to the DGCA, five people were on board the charter plane flying from Mumbai to Baramati, and none survived the crash.

“Ajit Pawar, Deputy CM of Maharashtra, was onboard along with 2 more personnel (1 PSO and 1 attendant) and 2 crew (PIC+FO) members. As per initial information, no person on board has survived the crash,” the DGCA said.

Pawar was travelling from Mumbai to Baramati to attend a campaign rally for the Zilla Parishad elections. The incident occurred at around 8.45 am when the Mumbai–Baramati charter plane carrying Pawar and others made a crash landing near the runway threshold at the Baramati airport.

His mortal remains have been kept at the Vidya Pratishthan ground in Baramati for the public to pay their last respects to him, and last rites will be performed with full state honours on Thursday at 11:00 am.

The Maharashtra government has declared a three-day mourning in honour of Ajit Pawar. All state government offices across Maharashtra will remain closed on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.

Meanwhile, Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has started the investigation into the crash.

"Indian media reporting the crash of a business jet this morning has claimed the life of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and 4 others. The aircraft was attempting a second approach to Baramati Airport when it crashed," Flightradar24 said in the post.

An eyewitness has described the moments of the crash. He told news agency ANI that the plane crashed and exploded upon impact. Around 4-5 explosions in the aircraft took place and led to a huge fire, which prevented people from helping those in the plane.
