Air India flight from Delhi to Amritsar ‘marginally infringed’ into Pakistani airspace; airline orders probe

An Air India flight from Delhi to Amritsar entered Pakistani airspace while manoeuvring a go-around at Amritsar Airport on June 22, the airline said.

According to the airline’s statement, flight AI479 “marginally infringed” into Pakistani airspace, which remains closed for Indian airlines.

“The crew operating flight AI479 from Delhi to Amritsar on 22 June had marginally infringed into Pakistani airspace while manoeuvring a go-around at Amritsar airport,” the airline said.

Soon after the incident, Air India informed regulatory authorities about the incident and launched an internal investigation.

“The incident has been reported to the regulatory authorities and is being investigated internally. At Air India, the safety of passengers and crew remains the top priority,” the statement added.

Pakistan has banned entry of Indian aircraft into its airspace since April last year. The ban was imposed amid escalating tensions between the two countries after the deadly Pahalgam terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir.

Earlier this month, Pakistan extended the ban on Indian civil and military aircraft till July 24.

“The ban on Indian aircraft — both civil and military — will remain in effect from 5:50 pm June 16 until 4:59 am July 24,” the Pakistan Airports Authority said in a notice issued last week.

India has also restricted Pakistani aircraft from using its airspace.
