Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Derek O’Brien on Monday underscored his party’s longstanding dedication to women’s political representation, spotlighting West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s consistent advocacy and the party’s electoral achievements as the national debate over the Women’s Reservation Bill gains momentum ahead of Parliament’s special session.
In a pointed statement, O’Brien presented a timeline of key milestones, beginning with Banerjee’s 1998 Parliament remarks, followed by the Trinamool’s notable 2014 record of fielding 41% women candidates and securing 37% women MPs. He also referenced a recent 2023 parliamentary speech to emphasize ongoing commitment.
In a direct jab at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, O’Brien said, “Narendra, before your big talk. Watch & learn,” positioning the Trinamool Congress as the pioneer in advancing women’s political participation.
The comments from the TMC leader came at a time when Parliament is preparing to debate the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023 that proposes reserving one-third of seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women — a move hailed as historic but scrutinized for its implementation timeline.
While supporting the principle of women’s reservation, the TMC insists the Central government must implement the measure promptly, without delays tied to delimitation or census exercises. The party also highlights its own progressive record, including the high percentage of women candidates it fielded in general elections.
Mamata Banerjee has been a vocal advocate of women’s empowerment since her early political career, frequently raising the issue of reservation and representation in Parliament. The party’s 2014 election strategy, with a significant share of tickets allotted to women, is often cited as proof of its genuine commitment.
O’Brien’s remarks reflect the intense political contest over leadership and credit on women’s empowerment as Parliament prepares to address a landmark issue of representation.
