Several organisations in western Rajasthan have called for a mass gathering here on February 25 to seek the immediate release of environmental activist and innovator Sonam Wangchuk.

These organisations have formed the “Rajasthan Sonam Wangchuk Release Forum” to spearhead the campaign for his release.

The activists will assemble at the main gate of the Central Jail here at 12 noon on February 25 to stage a peaceful dharna to press for the climate crusader’s immediate release. They will also seek permission to meet Wangchuk in jail.

Later, the front leaders will hold an open public discussion at 3 pm at Mahavir Udyan in front of the Collectorate.

A front spokesperson said here, “Sonam Wangchuk was arrested in Ladakh on September 26, 2025, and is currently lodged in Jodhpur Central Jail under the National Security Act (NSA).

The front alleged that Wangchuk has been detained under the NSA in an undemocratic and unlawful manner.

Independent Gandhian activist Himanshu Kumar will also join the protest. Having dedicated two decades to working for Adivasi rights in Bastar, he is currently undertaking a padyatra of over 250 kilometres across villages in western Rajasthan to mobilise support for Sonam Wangchuk’s release. He will arrive in Jodhpur on February 25.
