Acting principal suspended over student’s death in gate-pillar collapse

The acting principal of the Poonam Nagar village in the Jaisalmer district has been suspended over the death of a nine-year-old student in gate-pillar collapse on Monday.

According to District Education Office sources, Acting Principal Suman Bala has been asked to report at the Education Directorate headquarters at Bikaner during the suspension period.

The pillar of the main gate of the Government Senior Secondary School at Poonam Nagar (Harbour village) collapsed detaching the heavy iron gate. Arbaaz, the deceased student, and a teacher were hit by the falling gate. While the boy was trapped under the fallen gate died, the injured teacher was sent to the District Hospital in critical condition.

Since the accident on Monday, all schools – around 1,650 –government-run as well as private schools and Anganwadi centers have been closed until July 31. This step was taken to facilitate technical teams to survey the condition of the buildings and campuses of the school.

Meanwhile, the villagers of Poonam Nagar protested against the government’s decision to suspend the acting principal.
