Strongly criticizing the house arrest of AAP MP Sanjay Singh in Srinagar on Thursday, the Aam Aadmi Party accused the BJP of silencing the people’s voice.

In a dramatic turn of events, Singh was confined to a government guest house in Srinagar and prevented from holding a press conference or protest against the illegal arrest of AAP MLA Mehraj Malik.

In a statement issued here, AAP claimed that acting at the behest of the BJP, the police even stopped former Chief Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah from meeting the AAP MP.

Singh is currently in Jammu & Kashmir in connection with the alleged illegal arrest of AAP MLA Mehraj Malik.

On Thursday, he was scheduled to hold a press conference and lead a protest. He is staying at the government guest house in Srinagar, along with former minister and J&K Prabhari Imran Hussain. However, when he attempted to leave for the event in the morning, the police prevented him from stepping outside.

Sharing the video of the J&K police stopping Abdullah from meeting the AAP MP on X, party’s National Convener Arvind Kejriwal wrote, “Dr. Farooq Abdullah ji, the former Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, came to the guest house to meet our MP Sanjay Singh, but the police did not allow him to.

“Sanjay Singh has been placed under house arrest. The people’s voice is being silenced, and opposition leaders are being jailed. BJP has descended into open goondagardi. A former CM, who is also the father of the sitting Chief Minister, was not allowed to meet Sanjay Singh in his own state. This is sheer hooliganism and dictatorship.”

Senior AAP leader and Delhi Assembly Leader of Opposition (LoP) Atishi strongly condemned the BJP’s actions, saying on X, “Democracy is being murdered. Dictatorship is at its peak. Our MP Sanjay Singh had gone to Srinagar to hold a press conference and protest against the illegal arrest of MLA Mehraj Malik. But BJP has been so rattled that it has locked our leaders inside the guest house. This is an undeclared Emergency.”

In a post on X, Singh also expressed anguish, stating, “It is deeply saddening that Dr. Farooq Abdullah ji, who has served as Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir several times, came to the government guest house after hearing that I had been put under house arrest. Yet, he was not allowed to meet me. If this is not dictatorship, then what is?”

Earlier, Sanjay Singh had posted, “Dictatorship is at its peak. I am currently in Srinagar. In a democracy, raising one’s voice for rights and holding protests is our constitutional right. Today, we had planned a press conference and protest against the illegal arrest of Mehraj Malik. But the government guest house has been turned into a police cantonment. I, along with former minister Imran Hussain and colleagues, have not been allowed to step outside.”
