In a shocking incident, multiple Aadhaar cards were recovered from a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) office in in Bidhannagar in the Salt Lake area of Kolkata on Sunday, May 17.
Following the incident, tension prevailed in Ward No. 36 of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation area, IANS reported.
After getting information about the recovery, a large police contingent from the local police station was rushed to the spot, while investigation is underway to know how such a large number of Aadhaar cards reached the TMC office.
Sources told IANS that several members of the local TMC leadership could be questioned in connection with the matter.
Locals in the area have alleged that documents belonging to a large number of people were collected on various pretexts in order to prevent them from casting their votes.
The incident was reported at the Basanti Devi Colony in Ward No. 36 of Bidhannagar on Sunday morning.
Several residents in the area entered the TMC office and found multiple Aadhaar cards neatly stacked inside the premises. It is being said that they found at least 60 to 70 Aadhaar cards. As news of the recovery spread, tension and commotion gripped the locality.
Further, locals alleged that Aadhaar cards had been collected on several occasions in the name of facilitating access to different government welfare schemes and services. However, the cards were never returned later, they added.
As per reports, members of the local TMC leadership are believed to be involved in the matter to prevent certain people from voting in the recently concluded 2026 Assembly elections in the state.
Notably, similar recoveries were reported from the Salt Lake area as well as from Nanoor in Birbhum district.
