Even as socio-political unrest continues in the wake of the alleged rape and murder of a NEET aspirant in Patna, another shocking incident has been reported from Darbhanga, where a six-year-old girl was allegedly murdered after rape. Police have arrested the accused, identified as her 22-year-old neighbour Vikas Mahato.
People from the locality took to the streets demanding that the accused be handed over to them. During the protest, clashes broke out between the crowd and the police, and the unrest escalated from stone-pelting to a lathi charge.
Going by the allegations, on Saturday evening the child was playing near a pond along with other girls when the accused attempted to grab them. Two girls managed to escape, but the six-year-old was caught and taken away by the accused. Later in the evening, when family members began searching for her, they found the child lying unconscious soaked in blood on the other side of a wall near the pond. She had already died.
During investigation, the girls identified Vikas Mahato after viewing CCTV footage. Police immediately arrested him from his house and found bloodstains on his clothes.
Leader of the Opposition in Bihar Assembly Tejashwi Yadav alleged that criminals are emboldened under political protection. He said the lawlessness and disorder in the state is deeply alarming, and called Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s silence dangerous and criminal.
He reiterated that there was no one to listen to the victims and the poor in Bihar. Due to the police’s record-breaking failures, low conviction rates, and the chief minister’s indifference to such serious incidents, people have now taken to the streets.
Claiming that there has been an unexpected rise in recent incidents involving crimes against women and girls, he mentioned a list of recent incidents.
