At least 15 people were killed and more than 50 injured, several seriously, after a truck laden with cement rammed into three buses parked on the side of the road in Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh on Friday night.
According to reports, most of the deceased and injured were people returning home by the buses after attending Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s programme in Satna on Friday evening.
The mishap occurred at around 9 pm near Mohania tunnel in Badkhara village on Churhat-Rewa highway.
Initial police investigations said that the accident occured after the speeding truck loaded with cement suffered a tyre burst and its driver lost control of the vehicle. The buses were parked on the roadside, as people were taking refreshments and snacks from some eateries.
Two buses overturned and the third was also severely damaged after the truck hit them.
Police said that eight people died on the spot, while two were declared brought dead at Sidhi District Hospital and five died during treatment at Sanjay Gandhi hospital.
More than 50 others were injured, of whom 10 were serious.
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan met the injured in the hospital late at night. He expressed grief over the accident.
The CM announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the kin of each deceased. He also announced compensation of Rs two lakh to the seriously wounded and Rs one lakh to the injured. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed sadness over the mishap.
