Patna, 2 August: A day after around 30 schoolchildren fell sick after drinking water, another 55 girl students from a Kasturba Gandhi Girls Residential school in Bihar were taken ill and had to be hospitalised.
This is probably the 18th incident of water poisoning from hand pumps meant for school children in Bihar in the past  fortnight, causing fresh panic among the children.
Alarmed at the prevailing situation, the state government has ordered an investigation into the incidents while also asking the masses to be on alert.
Reports said the girls enrolled at the Kasturba Gandhi Girls Residential School located in Runnisaidpur block of Sitamarhi district fainted and their condition started deteriorating soon after they had consumed water from the hand pump sunk in the school premises, leaving the school authorities in a tizzy.
Immediately, they were rushed to the local hospitals for treatment. While 38 girls were admitted to the local primary health centre, the rest were shifted to the government medical college and hospital in the neighbouring Muzzaffarpur district. A day earlier, some 30 children had fallen sick after drinking water from hand pumps located in the school premises in three districts of Bihar.     sns
